One of the most powerful aspects of today’s page layout pro- grams is style sheets. Even some word processors have them. A style sheet lets you define a set of characteristics for text: font, size, justification, leading, hyphenation specifications, space before and after paragraphs, and much more. In fact, just about any aspect of text can be specified in a style sheet. After creating several style sheets—body, headlines, subheads, by-lines, etc.— they can be applied to paragraphs of text. Once you’ve created them, style sheets can really speed up your work. Find out more!

When Word 5.0 was released recently, the trade press suggested that the upgrade was probably not worth it’s $129 list price, but it did offer editable mathematical equations, which are a boon to the technical writer, and the now necessary built-in drawing module. The former is a version of Design Science’s MathType 3.11, which is also an industry standard and a very fine equation editor, while the latter is so fundamental and rudimentary as to be all but useless except for the most elementary sketches.

This technology allows typefaces to be customized along several axes - weight, width, optical size, and style. Instead of the normal set of four or six variations, a multiple master face can be adjusted by the user to yield an almost infinite number of variations. Read more of this review!

You’ve no doubt heard of computer viruses and Trojan horses. These are programs which can “infect” your computer and do various sorts of damage, up to and including erasing the entire contents of your hard drive. It’s natural to be at least a little para- noid about the subject. You can take some solace in the fact that there are only 17 known Macintosh viruses, according to a MacWEEK report, although there have been about 3,000 found in the DOS world. Further, a number of the Mac viruses are relatively benign, at worst caus- ing system crashes. Nevertheless, it’s wise to protect yourself. It’s not only wise, it’s easy, too.

We had so much fun that we decided to buy an Atari game machine for our teenaged daughter’s upcoming birthday. Leslie was out of town that day, so we we thought we’d try it out before she got home, and opened the box and started playing. When she got home nine hours later, we were still playing. Some surprise — her birthday wasn’t for another week. We suffered constantly from “Space Invaders’ Wrist” (remember that affliction?), but that didn’t slow down our purchases of every game made for the thing. RAM Doubler is like magic. (White magic, of course.) It was one of the hits of MacWorld Expo when it was introduced there a short time ago. We understand that it sold 6,000 copies there on the day it was introduced. Simply install this extension on your Mac, and you suddenly have twice the RAM (Random Access Memory) as before. If you had 8MB, you’ll get 16MB. A 5MB Mac will acts as if it has 10MB. It works. RAM Doubler works by using those parts of your RAM that aren’t busy doing other things; it uses your Mac’s memory more efficiently than the Mac does by itself. It’s sort of like Apple’s Virtual Memory, except that it’s more efficient.

When you think about clip art for the Macintosh, you’re likely to think first of T/Maker, the company who brought us the numerous and varied ClickArt series. T/Maker was one of the first companies to support the Mac platform in its infancy, and it has continued to serve as a primary source for quality images for use in electronic documents. Now T/Maker has introduced the ClickArt Incredible Image Pak, a whopping collection of over 2,000 EPS images in many different categories. In addition to all of the graphic files, there are some special items included, which we’ll discuss later. Art work is shown in the document.

Robin Williams' visit to SCAD was the highlight of recent months for Mac aficionados. Her workshops during the afternoon were inspiring, and her talk that evening was an uproariously funny look at how the computer can affect our social and psychological lives. Gene Thomas of A.I.S. computers introduced Robin. We’ve had exciting news from Adobe about Acrobat (reviewed in this issue). The Acrobat family of products is likely to revolutionize the way computer users store their data and share it with other users. I recently read that there are more people setting type on computers today than could read six hundred years ago when movable type came into being. This fact seems staggering until one realizes that the revolution in digital page composition includes many people who believe they are “typesetting” their memos and correspon- dence simply because they have access to actual typefaces and styles. For the most part, these individuals bring little more typographic awareness to the job than their earlier counterparts working on a typewriter. Find out more...

I know that those of you who were fortunate enough to have read the article will, without a doubt, remember the details, but for those of you who were not this blessed, let me briefly review what we were trying to do. Imagine that we are sitting around on a rainy day because the weather is too miserable for us to go out, and we begin wondering whether we should keep our common stock investments or put the money in a Money Market account.....

Can you tell if your floppy disk drive is working properly? It can be pretty obvious if you are having trouble reading or writing your own disks. But there are subtle things that can go wrong too, such as read/write head misalignment. Since you are writing your own disks with the head misaligned, you can read them with the same misalignment; but you may not be able to read a disk written with the heads in proper alignment. Some believe that periodic head cleaning is as important in a floppy disk drive as with an audio tape recorder. A solution to these problems is Drive Tech from Micromat Computer Systems. I found myself endlessly playing the game simply for the reward of hearing my Mac utter obscene squelching noises at the end of each level. I began to master the game with the hopes of increasing my bonus time to prolong the squelching noise. At some primitive level of being, I was amused. I’ve matured after playing the game for a month, and I can honestly say that I’m now equally addicted to the game’s adrenaline action. Playing Crystal Crazy allows you to do all the things Mom warned you not to - smash household items, fire heavy weapons, and blow up things. Read more about this great Casady and Greene game!
